What is Financial Aid?

Financial Aid is money given to students and parents for the purpose of helping families cover educational expenses. Educational expenses can include both costs directly associated with schooling (tuition, fees, and books) and the personal living expenses associated with attending school (housing, food, and insurance).

How many kinds are there?

There are several different types of financial aid for which students may apply.  The three basic categories are scholarships, grants, and loans.

  • Scholarships are usually merit-based awards given for achievement in academics, sports, or various types of service. Students don't pay back scholarships.
  • Grants are usually given on the basis of financial need and don't have to be paid back. Both schools and the federal government can grant students financial aid money.
  • Loans are sometimes given according to need, and other times according to requested amount. Loans ALWAYS have to be paid back. The three major loan categories are private loans (from banks) federal (from the government) and institutional loans (from Rivendell).

How is aid awarded?

1. First, students must submit the applications for the aid for which they wish to be considered.  Applications for all Rivendell financial aid can be found on this website.

2. The next step is evaluation of applications by the Rivendell College Financial Aid Committee (FAC), which holds three regularly scheduled meetings per semester to award aid.

3. After the FAC makes its decisions, students are notified by being sent a Financial Aid Award Letter by mail or email.

4. To confirm acceptance of the aid listed in the letter, the student must sign and return the Financial Aid Acceptance Notice by mail or email.

When Do I get it?

If you receive money from a source other than Rivendell College, you will have to contact that source to find out.  If you are receiving financial aid through Rivendell College, the amount on the award letter will be credited toward your student bill as soon as the bill is generated.

What about Work Study?

Financial Aid at Rivendell College does not include work-study.  However, some part-time work opportunities may be made available to qualified individuals through the Office of Student Affairs.  Pay for work performed is delivered directly to students.

Other Kinds of Aid

Federal Loans & Grants

Right now, Rivendell College students may not apply to receive federal aid.  However, Rivendell is seeking approval for Title IV Federal Funding. As soon as this approval has been granted, students may apply for federal funding by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and entering Rivendell's federal school code on the FAFSA.

Private Scholarships Grants

Private scholarships are provided by organizations other than Rivendell College. The organization sponsoring the scholarship selects the recipient and sends the funds to the College on behalf of the recipient. Because federal regulations do not permit students to receive financial aid over their cost of attending Rivendell, all scholarships must be reported to Rivendell College.

Private Loans

While Rivendell College is in the process of securing Title IV Federal Funding, students are encouraged to explore the possibility of private loans. See, for instance, the following websites.
